Wheelchair Accessible Disability Sidecar

Share Your Project – Disability Motorcycles

Believe it or not, there are quite a lot of Disability Motorcycles in the world.

I created this web page to discover how people with disabilities have modified motorcycles to allow access and a place to share your amazing project.

I am so thankful for the people who share their projects on the Internet.

Not only does it allow you to show off your wheels, it also encourages others that are about to begin modifying their bike.

The ideas you share can help others. I certainly researched other builds before I decided how I was going to create a wheelchair accessible sidecar for my daughter, Shanniah.

If you would like to share your ride or comment on the Wheelchair Accessible Motorcycles and modifications below, please feel free to contribute.

Accessibility for Motorcycles can generally be achieved within the following categories

1. Wheelchair Accessible Sidecars – Passenger

A Wheelchair Accessible Sidecar may be attached to a motorcycle to accommodate a passenger in a wheelchair or gopher. The sidecar is entered from the rear via a ramp which retracts to form the rear wall of the sidecar. The sidecar can be designed as a platform only, or can be enclosed for comfort and protection.

2. Wheelchair Accessible Sidecars – Sidecar Driven

Most sidecars require a companion to operate the motorcycle, however the sidecar can be adapted to operate the motorcycle by transferring the controls and handlebars to the sidecar, which can be used by the occupant while in his/her wheelchair. This type of sidecar motorcycle combination is called Sidecar Driven. You can learn about this option Here.

This configuration allows the wheelchair occupant to enter the sidecar and then transfer onto the motorcycle which usually has modified controls.

Shanniah’s “Heal the World”

Wheelchair Accessible Sidecar – Passenger

It took three years to build, from the purchase of the sidecar to the final coat of paint and airbrushed artwork. The sidecar was purchased before the bike. The bike was selected for it’s torque, having the capacity to carry a heavy sidecar and electric wheelchair. Every step of the project was photographed. The only reason it exists is because I never gave up, no matter how big the hurdles. Click the image to see more…

This motorcycle/sidecar combination is a Wheelchair Accessible Sidecar – Rider. You will see that this very sexy bike is ridden by the wheelchair occupant, while the wheelchair remains in the sidecar. Rich transfers from the wheelchair onto the motorcycle seat. Nicolas’s “Make a Wish”

Wheelchair Accessible Sidecar – Passenger

The power of a child’s wish. Thanks to so many kind people in the world, organisations like “Make a Wish” made a teenager very happy. Very encouraging video and story.

After years of living with Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy, an upbeat teenager has the newly found freedom to ride.

Watch the video to see how the lives of Nicolas and his parents change for the better because of the generosity of donors and volunteers.

“I wanted this wish because I thought it could be a big family thing and I could hang out with my father more. All three of us, it’d be like one big family.” Nicolas

Now Here’s a Good Question

Harley Davidson

I wonder if William Harley and Arthur Davidson built any Disability Motorcycles in the 1920’s?

I have a VW trike. I’m trying to find somebody to help me convert it so I can drive my wheelchair up on it and drive while still sitting in my wheelchair. I live in Sebring Florida. Do you know anybody that might be able to help me with this?
